Free Tickets to The Grand Vision Decision Kickoff Now Available

NOTE: THE REGIONAL KICKOFF IS NOW SOLD OUT!

(Traverse City, Michigan) - Due to the overwhelming interest shown in The Grand Vision, leaders of the land use and transportation project are asking citizens to request tickets if they plan to attend "The Grand Vision Decision Regional Kickoff" event next Tuesday evening, October 7 from 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at the State Theatre in Traverse City (233 E. Front Street). The event will feature a presentation of four community-driven scenarios for accommodating the inevitable growth in the region over the next 50 years, a question-and-answer period, and the opportunity to be among the first people to fill-out The Grand Vision Decision Scorecard - rating characteristics of each growth scenario.

Free tickets to the regional kickoff event, open to all citizens in the six-county area (Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Leelanau and Wexford), are available by phone: (231) 947-3446, by sending an email to tickets@traversecityfilmfestival.org with "Grand Vision" in the subject line, or by visiting the State Theatre box office to pickup tickets.

"Since everyone throughout the six counties is invited to attend the regional kickoff, we don't want to have someone make the trip and not be able to get in," said Marsha Smith, Chairperson of the Public Involvement Committee for The Grand Vision. "Ticketing will assure people a seat at what promises to be an interesting and memorable event. Although the topic of growth is serious, this event should be quite fun.

"We're especially grateful to Michael Moore and the State Theatre for helping us conduct this kickoff event at their place and the ticketing help they are providing," added Smith.

Individual county kickoff events are also scheduled, where attendees will be greeted with live, local music. The county events will review the same growth scenarios that will be presented at the regional kickoff meeting.

Grand Vision Update, September 18, 2008

Dear Grand Vision Supporter:

The Grand Vision is gearing up for the momentous October 7th - 28th Vision Decision and we need your help spreading the word. During this three-week period everyone who lives in and loves this community will be asked to fill out a Scorecard to voice their opinion about several possible future growth scenarios.

This is a truly grassroots, community planning activity, so the most important thing you can do is talk about The Grand Vision with your friends, family, co-workers and neighbors. And there are also a variety of great volunteer opportunities to help make sure we get full community involvement in this crucial phase of The Grand Vision.

Each of the six counties has a local leader who is coordinating a team of volunteers.

Antrim County - Peter Garwood, Antrim County Coordinator,

garwoodp@antrimcounty.org, 533-6265

Benzie County - Craig Seger, Benzie County Zoning Administrator,

cseger@benzieco.net, 882-9674

Grand Traverse County - Jennifer Hutchinson, Grand Vision Decision Coordinator,

jen@leelanau.com, 218-0096

Kalkaska County - Jack Kelly, Kalkaska County Zoning Administrator,

kalkaskazoning@yahoo.com, 258-3367

Leelanau County - Trudy Galla, Leelanau County Planning Director,

tgalla@co.leelanau.mi.us, 256-9812

Wexford County - Vance Edwards, Cadillac Wexford Transit Authority Director,
cwtadirector@yahoo.com, 775-9411

Contact the team leader from your county to get more involved in any of these activities:

  • Put up posters in public places around your county announcing the Vision Decision and County Kickoff Event.
  • Write a letter to the editor of your local paper in support of the Grand Vision.
  • Ask your workplace, church, civic group or other community group to place a note in its newsletter, e-mail and/ or Web site to notify other members about the Grand Vision Decision
  • Spread the word to your friends and contacts by email or through Facebook (join the Grand Vision group) and send links to thegrandvision.org to see videos of local residents voicing their opinions.
  • Offer to be a speaker to your local government, civic group, or school. We have a toolkit that includes video presentations, talking points, and handouts as well as buttons and bumper stickers.
  • Help distribute scorecards and distribution/ collection boxes on October 6th to high-traffic commercial businesses throughout your county.

If you have other questions about how you can get involved contact Jennifer Hutchinson at 218-0096 or at jen@leelanau.com.

Thanks for your help in spreading the word about this important opportunity to help our region prepare for coming growth!

P.S. If you are interested in getting even more involved, a committed team of volunteers meets weekly as a Public Involvement Committee (PIC) at the Grand Traverse County Governmental Center on Wednesdays from noon to 1:30 p.m.. All are welcome!

Grand Vision Update!

Growth is coming to our region. The Grand Vision lets us decide, together, how that growth happens.

This fall, during the Grand Vision Decision, citizens will cooperatively construct a 50-year growth plan for the region that has the broadest possible public support. That support is critical: It will show local and state government officials that they can implement the new plan and the funding recommendations that accompany it with the full confidence that they have strong support from most citizens to act.

Harris Survey Impacting the Grand Vision!

Click to listen to an interview with Dee Allsop at IPR News Radio!

Individual County Findings to Be Shared Next Week at Update Sessions

(Traverse City, Michigan) — Recent findings of a Harris Interactive (www.harrisinteractive.com) values research survey, commissioned by The Grand Vision, will help shape recommendations for land use and transportation for the next 50 years.

"The Harris survey data is one of the key components that will be impacting regional growth scenarios The Grand Vision consulting team is preparing,” said Matt McCauley, Associate Director of Regional Planning for the Northwest Michigan Council of Governments. "The team is also reviewing hundreds of land use and transportation maps developed at public workshops and a variety of economic and environmental criteria that will affect the desirability of various scenarios.”

"While we have had over 3,000 people participate in The Grand Vision through various public events over the last year, we also wanted to deliberately reach out and talk to a randomly selected cross-sample of people throughout our region," said Marsha Smith, Chairperson of The Grand Vision Public Involvement Committee.

Results of the values research are now being shared online at www.thegrandvision.org and at upcoming county information sessions scheduled to begin next week throughout the area (see County Information Update Sessions below). According to Harris Interactive, the goal of the research was "to assess values of those living in the region so that regional planning and envisioning will protect and promote the things about which the relevant population cares most dearly.”

"This is a special place in many different ways,” said Dee Allsop, PhD and former Divisional President of Harris Interactive, Inc. who presented the summary of findings. "One, it's not feeling the same level of pain as currently being felt around the country in terms of the economy. Secondly, unlike other parts of the country that feel pain from growth and are motivated to do something about it, the motivation in the Grand Traverse region is simply an appreciation of the high quality of life people currently experience... They want to protect what they have. And what really impresses me are the progressive attitudes toward growth and smart growth principles that exist in the region.”

Additional key findings included:

  • Progressive attitudes toward growth embraced by survey respondents included open space preservation, clustering homes on smaller lots and multifamily housing.
  • Protecting the environment is more important than elsewhere in the country and perceived to be growing more important.
  • Jobs and the affordability of living in the region were the greatest concerns raised in the survey.
  • Notable by their absence were such typical concerns as traffic, immigration, crime and education.
  • The Harris Interactive survey was conducted by telephone from July 2 to July 14, 2008 and survey times averaged 21 minutes. A total of 547 interviews were completed.

According to McCauley, various growth scenarios will be presented during The Grand Vision Decision, October 7 – 28, when residents in the six county area (Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Leelanau, Wexford) will be asked to fill out a scorecard, rating each of the scenarios (see Kickoff Schedule Below).

Grand Vision Values Research PowerPoint

Harris Interactive was commissioned to conduct values-based research to assess values of those living in the Grand Traverse region so that regional planning and envisioning will protect and promote the things about which the relevant population care most dearly.

Harris designed a two-stage research study. The qualitative research stage identified values important to residents. These values were confirmed in quantitative surveys representing the population of the six-county Grand Traverse region.
