About the Grand Vision

What is the Grand Vision?

Through one of the most comprehensive citizen led initiatives in the nation, the residents of Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Leelanau, and Wexford counties created a vision for the future development of our region. DownTown Traverse City MichiganParticipants expressed their preference for development centered primarily in the region's cities and villages, identifying the following guiding principles for the Grand Vision:

  • Improve the region's existing network of roads and public transportation, and provide better infrastructure for bikers and pedestrians.
  • Foster public and private investments to strengthen cities, villages and planned growth areas.
  • Expand diverse and affordable housing options that fit the region's character.
  • Encourage local food, farming and rural development as a vital part of our economy, culture and identity.
  • Incorporate sustainable energy principles into building, transportation, power generation, and all aspects of the region's economy.
  • Protect, preserve, and restore the water resources, forests, natural areas, and scenic beauty of the region.

Why is the Grand Vision important?

The special characteristics of our region’s place in the world are key to attracting and retaining talented people, to supporting key business sectors and to enhancing the quality of life and opportunity for every individual in our region. The Grand Vision serves as a foundation for our future by helping us to develop that place and to preserve and enhance the features that make it a great place to live, work and play.

How will the Grand Vision be implemented?

By all of us. There is no single entity that bears the responsibility for implementation of the Grand Vision. Mick Road Monster MapleThe success of the Grand Vision will rely on the active engagement of citizens, local governments, businesses, and civic and non-profit organizations.

In an open and transparent process, participants in The Grand Vision will recommend improvements, collaborate with stakeholders, and facilitate the implementation of the Grand Vision’s guiding principles to assist in the region's growth.

Several working groups have begun the process of implementing the Grand Vision. This will be an ongoing process that welcomes your involvement and participation.

Why should I care?

The challenges that the future holds are great. Economic hardship, resources under pressure, and a rapidly changing world call on all of us to band together now and strive for a place that can rise to meet these and other challenges that we are now and will face.
