Traverse City Applies For Almost Half Million To Redesign Bayfront

Grand Traverse BayThe principle that guides the work of the Grand Vision in regards to Natural Resources is to protect, preserve, and restore the water resources, forests, natural areas, and scenic beauty of the region.

This week, Interlochen Public Radio reported that Traverse City is applying for $450,000 to begin redesigning the Traverse City bay front.

Here are highlights from the report:

"Traverse City is applying to the state for funds to start rebuilding its Bayfront park, starting with the site of the former Clinch Park Zoo.

"Designers have yet to formalize specific building plans and they're still asking the public for input, but Bayfront Steering Committee Chair Nate Elkins says the concept is pretty clear at this point. It includes trail improvements, a boat launch for kayaks, and a children's play area with a splash pad.

'He says, right now, people tend to pass through this part of the park.

"So we're hoping these improvements will create a space that people can come and enjoy and be in for a few hours, more so that just a few seconds passing through," Elkins says.

"Monday night Commissioners agreed to ask the state Natural Resources Trust Fund for $450,000 dollars to build a kayak launch and children's play area at the site. The city would need to come up the of half of the money."
