Traverse City Commission Revisits The Case of Division Street

On Tuesday, Jan. 12, Traverse City Commissioners will re-tackle the issue of Division street. The commission will meet at the Governmental Center at 7pm.

Division street poses a dilemma with a lot of moving parts for the city, as 21-24,000 vehicles pass through each day. The Record-Eagle has this latest update to the story:

"The street needs to be transformed from a burden on our city to an asset for our city," [Mayor Chris Bzdok] said.
Division Street handles between 21,000 and 24,000 vehicles each day, ranking it among the busiest streets in Traverse City, according to state transportation records.

City officials last year decided to put off a planned state resurfacing project that would have maintained the street design as is for at least another decade. Meanwhile, officials are working on plans to overhaul the highway, or at least rejuvenate the state's planned maintenance project in 2011.

The goal is to create a "more inviting entrance" into Traverse City from the south, city Manager R. Ben Bifoss said. "Right now it's just four lanes of asphalt," he said. "It's impossible to cross and acts as a divider in the community. It's too loud, too fast."

This region should be ready and prepared to apply some leading edge traffic technology to this major corridor. Done right, we can move traffic at a more consistent flow, provide increased options and add value to that neighborhood.

Just to clarify, the focus of Traverse City Tomorrow is broad, not focused on Division St. The blog post referred to just has those two items as its subjects this week.
