Michigan's Road Funds Threatened
Michigan may lose $475 million in highway funding in 2010. Crain's Detroit Business reports that MDOT warns the state may lose $2.1 billion dollars in highway funding through 2014. The reason? Michigan may not be able to fulfill its eligibility for the federal funds because the state is unable to match the funding:
MDOT's new draft of a five-year transportation plan, currently out for public comment, lays out two scenarios: how the state would spend money if it could draw down all available federal revenue, and a reduced highway spending strategy that includes spending nearly $2.4 billion less through fiscal 2014.
The reduced strategy would delay more than 375 miles of pavement improvements equating to more than 100 projects, decrease by 575 the number of bridge projects planned for work, and reduce numerous other state areas and programs.
